Retinal Burn
First-Person Horror Shooter / Visual Alignment Boss Fight
Retinal Burn is a first-person horror shooter centered on a visual targeting mechanic inspired by retinal afterimages. Players explore an eerie interior space to discover cult symbols, which become “burned” into their vision and later serve as the key to damaging the boss. By aligning the symbol carried on the player’s retina with the symbol appearing on the boss, the player can land a successful attack.
In this project, I focused on translating a surreal visual idea into a playable combat system. My main goal was to explore how perception itself could become part of the gameplay loop—turning the player’s screen, vision, and sense of alignment into core mechanics rather than just visual style. I was especially interested in building tension through uncertainty: asking players to observe carefully, reposition under pressure, and read visual cues while facing a threatening enemy.
Through this design, I aimed to create a horror experience that feels both psychological and mechanical—where visual discomfort is not only atmospheric, but directly tied to decision-making, timing, and combat success.
